Healthy Habits, Happy Kids: The Importance of Nutrition and Exercise for Children, Part 2

Thank you for joining me, Dewey Does, for part 2 of this blog series. If you missed part 1, be sure to check it out for some handy hints concerning your child’s nutrition, and how it doesn’t need to be complicated, time-consuming, or expensive to feed them a healthy breakfast.

In part two we move over to the exercise world and provide you with some exercise games for kids. Because stretching and flexibility are important, we also have some exercises for your child to get warmed up for the sport or activity of their choosing.

Stretching Exercise Games for Kids

Stretching is an important part of any exercise routine. Here are some stretching exercises that children can do to help improve their flexibility and prevent injury. better yet, turn them into some fun exercise games for kids with some friendly competition, music, or whatever else motivates your young audience.

Toe Touches

Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and reach down to touch your toes. Hold for 10-15 seconds.

Butterfly Stretch

Sit on the floor with the soles of your feet together and gently press your knees down towards the floor. Hold for 10-15 seconds.

Cobra Stretch

Lie face-down on the floor with your hands underneath your shoulders. Slowly push up with your arms, lifting your chest off the ground. Hold for 10-15 seconds.

Cat-Cow Stretch

Start on your hands and knees, with your hands directly under your shoulders and your knees directly under your hips. Arch your back and drop your head towards the floor, then round your back and tuck your chin to your chest. Repeat for 10-15 reps.

Flexibility Exercise Games for Kids

In addition to stretching exercise games for kids, there are also specific flexibility exercises that can help improve your child's range of motion and overall flexibility. Again, make them fun, and turn them into some exciting exercise games for kids.

Here are some examples:

Leg Swings

Stand with your hands on a wall or chair for support. Swing one leg forward and backward, then switch to the other leg. Do 10-15 reps on each side.

Scorpion Stretch

Lie face-down on the floor with your arms extended out to the sides. Lift one leg up and over towards the opposite hand, then switch to the other side. Do 10-15 reps on each side.

Arm Circles

Stand with your arms extended out to the sides. Slowly make small circles with your arms, gradually increasing the size of the circles. Do 10-15 reps in each direction.

Exercise Games for Kids

Exercise doesn't have to be boring! Here are some fun exercise games that kids will love:

Simon Says

Use the classic game of Simon Says to incorporate exercise moves like jumping jacks, squats, and lunges.

Freeze Dance

Turn on some music and have the kids dance around. When the music stops, they have to freeze in a specific position (like a squat or a lunge) and hold it until the music starts again.

Obstacle Course

Set up an obstacle course in your backyard or living room. Include exercises like jumping over cones, crawling under chairs, and doing a crab walk.

Trendy Kids’ Clothes for Active Kids

In conclusion, nutrition and exercise are essential components of a healthy lifestyle for children. By providing them with healthy breakfast options and store-bought snacks, as well as incorporating stretching and flexibility exercises and exercise games into their daily routine, you can help your child develop healthy habits that will last a lifetime.
