How the Rise of Women's Basketball is Providing More Opportunities for Our Girls
Women's basketball has been on the rise in recent years, with more and more attention being paid to the sport at all levels. From high school to college to professional leagues, women's basketball is attracting fans and players alike. The more it grows, the more opportunities there will be for our future superstars.
Players like Nicole Melious are exciting to watch
One standout example of the sport's growth is seen in the story of Susan Wagner's Nicole Melious, who recently became Staten Island's all-time schoolgirls' scoring leader with 2,175 points.
Melious' achievement is a testament to the hard work and dedication required to excel in basketball. She worked tirelessly over the course of her high school career to achieve this milestone, and her performance on the court during the game where she broke the record was nothing short of impressive.
"I'm so happy to break the record and so happy to do it at home, in front of family, my team and school who are like family as well," said Melious. "There were some nerves. I do get nervous, but I just let the game come to me and knew I could get it done.”
She continued, "After freshman year, I set this goal to become the Island’s all-time leading scorer and have worked hard to make it happen. This is by far my biggest individual accomplishment, but I would love to break Kyle’s (McAlarney, the boys’ all-time scoring leader with 3,140 points) record.”
Impact at all levels, and even off the court
Nicole’s story is just one example of the many talented female basketball players who are making waves in the sport. At the professional level, women's basketball is also gaining steam. The WNBA has been around since 1997, but in recent years, the league has seen a surge in popularity and support. The league's players are some of the best basketball players in the world, with many of them also representing their countries on the international stage.
The WNBA has also become a platform for social justice, with players using their voices and their platform to advocate for the causes they believe in. From speaking out against police brutality to supporting women's reproductive rights, WNBA players are using their influence to make a difference in the world.
It’s not perfect, but it's moving in the right direction
Women's sport still faces its fair share of challenges. Despite the growing interest in the sport, female sportspeople are often paid far less than their male counterparts. Additionally, there is also a lack of media coverage for women's basketball, with many games and players going unnoticed by mainstream media outlets. This can make it difficult for players to gain recognition and for fans to follow the sport.
However, the future is looking bright for women's basketball, with small steps being taken in the right direction. As more and more young girls pick up a basketball and follow in the footsteps of high school superstar Nicole Melious, and college superstars, Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark, the sport will continue to grow and thrive.
